PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

This 486 computer is available in two metal cabinets: a low_profile 4-slot with room for 4 mass storage devices (4x4) or a mini-tower. The system board includes Flash-BIOS, a ZIF_socketed processor, 32-bit local VL bus video controller, dedicated connector for FAX/modem accessory, serial port (NS16550-compatible), bidirectional parallel port supporting EPP and ECP, PS/2-style mouse port, floppy and enhanced IDE (EIDE) hard drive interfaces. Also included are all basic I/O interfaces for floppy, hard drive and SMC ETHERNET LAN (10Base-T and 15-pin AUI). The PCI interface is entirely on the riser card. A secondary IDE channel allows up to four IDE drives or an optional IDE CD_ROM drive. Two drives reside on the local bus controller; the other two are on the traditional IDE channel. Minimum cache (L2 write-back) is 128k upgradable to 256k or 512k . Minimum memory is 8M (4M surface-mounted) upgradable to 128M. Minimum video memory is 1M surface-mounted upgradable to 2M. Multimedia configurations are supported using internal CD_ROM and audio card. Energy Star compliance is featured and adherence to the Microsoft Plug & Play standard, allowing automatic card configuration. No MS-DOS and Windows disks are included, nor is an MS_DOS manual, but a Windows manual is included.

In-warranty maintenance is performed to the major module assembly level listed in the Field Replaceable Units (FRU) section of this PMRB.

FLASH-BIOS

Beginning in September 1995, Flash-BIOS code was upgraded from the 1.2C code 890-3607-05 to a base v3.0 code 890-3607-07.

At about the same time, new mainboards began shipping on all Z-STATION 510 units. The new mainboards (150_1824_Px and 150-1835-Px) use a 1MB Flash-BIOS instead of the previous (150_0824-Px and 150-835-Px) mainboards that used a 2MB Flash-BIOS. A different Flash-BIOS structure is used and is identified by a different Flash-BIOS part number. The new 1MB FLASH is also a version v3.0 code.

WARNING: The two Flash-BIOS firmware codes are not interchangable between the older and the newer boards. Flashing boards with the incorrect part number code will result in corrupted firmware installations and non-operating computers!

To eliminate the need to know which type of mainboard is in the unit, a Smart Flash code has been developed and placed on the BBS. The Smart Flash code will support both of the mainboards and will automatically determine which size BIOS code is required on the particular mainboard that is being flashed, and automatically upgrade with the appropriate v3.0 BIOS code.

Routine upgrades to each FLASH code will follow parallel paths. For example, if 890_3607 is upgraded, the 890-3784 will also be upgraded with similar changes adjusted for the unique code base. Because they are not interchangable, each will carry different part numbers and filenames, but the electronic display may show the same upgrade version number.
