PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

This computer is based on the Intel Pentium P54 Series microprocessors intended for the individual professional computer user. This computer has a fully integrated
CD-ROM and multimedia capability (i.e. high quality color displays, stereo Sound Blaster Pro compatible audio, NTSC/PAL video output and MPEG video support). Standard memory is 8MB expandable to 40MB.

The available LCD panels range from SVGA DSTN color to SVGA TFT color in the various models. External supported video includes 1024 x 768 (x 256 colors), 800 x 600 (x 256 colors) and 640 x 480 (x 256 colors). Simulscan at LCD panel resolution is available. 1MB of video DRAM with graphics accelerator (2MB future factory option). Audio is integrated 16-bit, Sound Blaster Pro, left/right stereo speakers, input/output jacks, built-in microphone and manual volume control. One type II or one type III PCMCIA device is supported including ZDS approved PCMCIA LAN adapters.

The computer is available with either the latest version of MS-DOS® and Microsoft Windows for Workgroups or Windows 95 pre-installed.

The MS-DOS and WFW pre-install includes: Integrated (Microsoft PS/2 compatible) Trackball Drivers & PCMCIA Card/Socket Services, Tranxit IR and Microsoft Sound System 2.0 Software. CoSession software comes pre-installed and supplied on disk on U.S. models only. This package allows the ZDS Customer Assistance Center (CAC) to access the customers computer providing the computer is operational and the customer has a modem connected. Online documentation is also pre-installed.

The WIN95 pre-install includes: Norton AntiVirus, Norton Navigator, Netscape Navigator (US Only), CoSession (US Only), Tranxit IR and Online documentation.

TECH-NOTES

A. Z-NOTE GT:

SUBJECT A1:
Battery and AC information not displayed properly through OS/2 operating system.

Recommended Response:
Use battery gauge in Z-NOTE GT system status panel to track approximate battery life.

SUBJECT A2:
When connected to a ZDS 1490 (or similar VGA) monitor, the sync is not correct using Simulscan (simultaneous display) mode.

Recommended Response:
Press Fn-F7 to switch to LCD or CRT only mode. If simultaneous video is required, use a SVGA monitor.

SUBJECT A3:
In MPEG 800x600x256 mode, the HSYNC & VSYNC timing changes between Simulscan, LCD only, and CRT only modes.

Recommended Response:
Press Fn-F7 to switch to either LCD only or Simulscan modes. Change the HSYNC & VSYNC polarity settings from the Windows Media Player option:

b. Choose Device
c. Choose Configure
d Choose Overlay
e. Choose VGA - HSYNC & VSYNC Polarity

SUBJECT A4:
The C&T video drivers for OS/2 do not support the PCI Interface.

Recommended Response:
Use standard VGA mode.

SUBJECT A5:
The screen of the CRT is not viewable in WFW 3.11 with a resolution of 640 x 480 x 32K/64K if video is set to CRT only mode.

Recommended Response:
Press Fn-F7 again to switch to either LCD only or Simulscan mode.

TECH-NOTES

SUBJECT A6:
Some external microphones do not work.

Recommended Response:
For a customer with one of the first 3000 units, send them a microphone (ZDS part number 480-0092) at no cost, or use the internal microphone.

SUBJECT A7:
Type III PC Card is difficult to install or eject.

Recommended Response:
Advise customer that Type III PC Card devices (normally a HDD) are designed to fit tightly within slot. Use a pen or screwdriver to firmly press eject switch for full release and grasp left or right edges of card to remove from system.

SUBJECT A8:
Noise through headphones or speaker - especially when moving mouse and simultaneously playing audio CD.

Recommended Response:
If not utilizing CD-ROM drive, mute CD channel through ESS mixer utility in WFW models, or through Multimedia utility in Win95. Set volume at minimal acceptable volume to reduce static.

SUBJECT A9:
Flicker on television when using TV-out feature:

Recommended Response:
Since all televisions utilize interlaced video (every other line is scanned), the video quality of the computer generated image will not be as clear or stable as when displayed on a computer monitor (which is typically non-interlaced). This "flicker" condition is more apparent when displaying text (especially small font text) and less apparent when displaying still graphics or moving video.

SUBJECT A10:
Out-of-Sync video when using TV-out feature.

Recommended Response:
To use the TV video-out feature, the Z-NOTE GT's video resolution must be set to 640 x 480. Within the "Chips" video icon in the Windows Control Panel, verify that video resolution has been adjusted to 640 x 480 for both LCD and CRT. Also, make sure that the Fn-F7 toggle has been correctly set to NTSC video mode (order is LCD only, Simulscan, TV video out, CRT only).

TECH-NOTES

SUBJECT A11:
Inadequate sound volume from on-board stereo speakers.

Recommended Response:
Verify that sound channel (microphone, cd, wav, etc) has been maximized within the ESS audio mixer in WFW or the Multimedia volume control in Win95. Verify that the manual volume dial control on the right-hand side of the Z-NOTE GT has been set to maximum level. Inform the user that the Z-NOTE GT sound system has been designed to suit personal use. If a greater audio range is desired (i.e. for presentations), recommend the use of optional external speakers.

In extreme cases, verify the customer has the newer version Audio PCB 150-1081 level -04 or greater (base unit of 193-aaaa-27* or greater) and if not, replace it with the newer Audio PCB.

SUBJECT A12:
When upgrading a Z-NOTE GT from Windows 3.x to WIN95, customer may complain about not being able to see the CD-ROM after the installation.

Recommended Response:
The HDD controller that WIN95 defaults to is National Semiconductor Dual PCI (RMM Support Only). This is the wrong one to use. Check this by looking at system properties under Control Panel. The driver required is National Semiconductor Dual PCI IDE Controller (PC87410) with two child drivers:

PC87410 Secondary IDE controller (dual FIFO)

This driver is not part of the WIN95 software. In the ZDS DOS/Windows 3.x software, the MAKEDISK.EXE utility the user could create a disk called PC87410 PCI IDE-2 Drivers Master Disk 1 of 1. On this disk is a subdirectory called WIN95. In this subdirectory is a install utility for WIN95. After installing WIN95 on the Z-NOTE GT, run this install utility.

NOTE: Do NOT run the INSTALL.BAT from the root directory because this installation is for a DOS installation ....... NOT WIN95!!! Run the install utility from the WIN95 subdirectory on the floppy disk you just created. The utility will bring up the WIN95 Hardware Wizard. When the Hardware Wizard finishes, it will ask the user to reboot. If after rebooting, WIN95 reports the driver to be in conflict, the user will need to restart WIN95 into safe mode, then remove the driver in system properties under Control Panel. When the user restarts WIN95 in normal mode, it will automatically detect the HDD controller and assign the correct driver to it.

TECH-NOTES

SUBJECT A13:
When using an external VGA monitor or overhead panel the user may experience a bleeding to the right or out of focus condition (especially on 1024 x 768 video mode). This may be caused by the main PCB external video circuitry overdriving the peripheral display device.

This only applies to units with a main PCB level lower than 150-1080-07 (base unit level lower than193-aaaa-27*).


CAUTION: If the user already has a MPEG Card, this card must be replaced with the newer version to be compatible with the replacement main PCB. The new MPEG Card is a 150-1149 level -00 or greater.

Z-NOTE GT Unable to Access CD-ROM After Windows 95 Upgrade

Symptom
After upgrading the Z-NOTE GT from Windows 3.x to Windows 95, the CD-ROM drive can no longer be accessed.

Policy
There is currently no specific policy that applies to this issue.

Cause
The hard drive controller that Windows 95 defaults to is National Semiconductor Dual PCI (RMM Support only). This is not the correct driver. Check this by looking at system properties under Control Panel.

Resolution
Change the driver to National Semiconductor Dual PCI IDE (PC87410) with two child drivers; PC87410 Primary IDE controller (dual FIFO), and PC87410 Secondary IDE controller (dual FIFO).
