PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
The Z-STAR ES (Z-STAR for US) is based on the 486 series microprocessors. The standard IDE hard drive sizes are 250MB and 420MB. All models have 4MB of system memory soldered on the main board, and are expandable to 8MB, 12MB, or 20MB. The LCD panels used are STN monochrome or DSTN color. Standard video memory is 512KB for monochrome and color models. External video supported includes 640 x 480 (16 colors) and 640 x 480 (256 colors).
Features include one Type II PCMCIA slot or one Type III slot, integrated trackball pointing device, transducer, one serial port, one parallel port, external VGA video port, PS/2-compatible keyboard port, modular floppy drive, modular battery pack, and built-in AC adapter.
MS-DOS, Windows, and Phoenix PCMCIA Plus card and socket services are included.

In-warranty service is performed to the major module assembly level, listed in the Field Replaceable Units (FRU) section of this PMRB.

TECHNICAL NOTES
Issue #1:
Description:
In the PC Tools 9.0 Tools/SI Pro/Diagnostics/Display Adapter Test, the video display flickers in the color bar test item.
Recommended Response:
This issue is inherent in the PC Tools 9.0 program. Earlier versions of PC Tools do not exhibit the problem.
Issue #2:
Description:
When running full screen DOS in the OS/2 2.11 operating system, the video is temporarily corrupted when using a key combination to toggle between full screen DOS and OS/2.
Recommended Response:
This is inherent in the OS/2 2.11 operating system.
Issue #3:
Description:
In the PC Tools 9.0 Tools/SI Pro/Diagnostics/Display Adapter Test, the video display is corrupted when the screen size is configured for 43 lines (EGA only).
Recommended Response:
PC Tools 9.0 treats 486 CPUs as Pentiums. This causes the video to be corrupted. Earlier versions of PC Tools do not exhibit the problem.
Issue #4:
Description:
Moving the trackball continuously while pressing the FN+F5 (to enter Standby) or FN+F11 (to enter Setup) key combination can cause the pointing device cursor to react erratically.
Recommended Response:
This is not a valid key sequence, and is not supported.
Issue #5:
Description:
The battery life in Standby mode is 5 hours if Rest mode (Save-to-Disk) is disabled.
Recommended Response:
The battery life is five hours in Standby mode because the following circuits are powered on: CPU ( speed), VGA controller, I/O controller, keyboard controller, and PCMCIA controller. To extend the battery life, enable the Rest feature in Setup.
Issue #6:
Description:
The hard drive has 22MB of space missing.
Recommended Response:
The units Save-to-Disk feature requires that the hard drive is partitioned so that 22MB of space is always available. The space on the partition is allocated in the following way: 20MB for conventional/extended memory, 1MB for video memory, and 1MB is reserved. This partition is hidden and is not accessible by the user.
